Time Difference
French Polynesia spans three time zones. Papeete follows Tahiti Time (GMT-10), Marquesas Time is GMT-9.5 and Gambier Time is GMT-9. The country doesn't observe Daylight Saving Time. All clocks remain the same time throughout the year.
Money
While credit cards like Visa, Mastercard and Amex are widely accepted, those with other cards may face challenges when attempting to make purchases. Fortunately, ATMs are available across the country but we do recommend keeping some small cash with you on all times.
Electricity
French Polynesia operates on a standard voltage of 110/220 V and a standard frequency of 60/50 Hz. Power plugs and sockets commonly used are type A, B, and E. For British travellers, we recommend bringing an adapter with you.
Shopping and Amenities
Typically, stores in French Polynesia open from 8am to 11.30am and 1.30pm to 5.30pm (although don't be surprised if there are slight variations). While most shops in Papeete open on Saturday mornings, it's likely they will be closed on Sundays.
Media
French Polynesia has several new websites, such as Tahiti Infos and La Dépêche. Television channels like Tahiti Nui TV (French: Tahiti Nui Télévision or TNTV) cover a range of content, including news and sports, and offer a comprehensive overlook of French Polynesian current affairs.
Post
Papeete's main post office is located in the city's downtown area, near the seafront. It is open from 7am to 6pm on weekdays and 8am to 11am on Saturdays. You can find more post offices across the main island and in the region's smaller islands.
Phone
When dialing the United Kingdom from French Polynesia, use the following sequence: 00 - 44 - area code and then the number or 00 - 44 followed by the 10-digit mobile number.
Internet and Mobile Coverage
Vini, Viti, and Tahiti Wifi are the main service providers. We recommend Vini by OPT (Office des Postes et Télécommunications) and Vodafone Polynesia, who both operate reliable coverage across the country.
Currency
French Polynesia uses the French Pacific Franc (CFP), commonly known as the CFP Franc.
