Crystal Bay Diving Holidays: An Overview
Crystal Bay is a secluded sandy cove on the western side of Nusa Penida and one of the best places in Indonesia for seeing the elusive mola mola, also known as ocean sunfish.
The best time for diving in Crystal Bay if you're looking for mola mola is between July and October, although it's a beautiful dive destination throughout the year thanks to its warm tropical waters and rich marine life.
The bay has a small island between the shore and open water which keeps it sheltered from the area's strong currents and upwellings. It's behind the island, after what's called the 'second corner', where divers can come across mola mola at depths of around 30 metres. However, this area is reserved for experienced divers only due to strong down currents.
Beginners, or those who prefer an easy-going fun dive, can stay on the left side of the bay, which is home to a lovely coral plateau with colourful reef fish, a variety of nudibranchs and the occasional turtle.
