Days 1 & 2: International Flights
Your adventure begins today with an overnight flight to Guam with a few stops along the way. Speed through security with fast-track check-in and head to the lounge before you settle in with a good movie for your 13-hour flight to Singapore. After a short layover, you'll then board a flight just shy of four hours (three hours and 50 minutes, to be precise) onwards to Manila. From here, it's an identical flight time onwards to Guam before your final flight (it's worth it, we promise) to Chuuk Lagoon. The final flight is only one hour and 45 minutes. Look out of the window to catch the first glimpses of this tiny island sitting pretty in the middle of the Central Pacific.
On arrival, you'll be driven the 20-minute journey along the western coastline down south towards your hotel. Settle into your room, take off your shoes to walk barefoot through the verdant gardens and enjoy some fresh air after your long travels. You've arrived at the start of what promises to be an epic adventure.
Days 3-6: The adventure begins
Wake up slowly and enjoy a long breakfast (we recommend trying the banana fritters) to the soundtrack of bird song as you sit on your ocean-view private balcony. The next two days are for you to adjust to Micronesia time, start that holiday read and begin to dip your fins into the water.
While you won't be able to dive just yet after your long flight, it doesn't mean the ocean is off-limits. Slip into the gin-clear waters with your snorkel to see the tropical reef fish and maybe enjoy an afternoon of paddle boarding. You can also head out on jungle treks through the lush landscape that surrounds your hotel. Or perhaps two days lying beneath coconut trees, feeling the sun's warm rays on your skin while you munch on fresh papaya is how you want to begin your holiday. However you choose to settle in, end each evening with a sunset cocktail and toast to the start of your trip.
Day 7: All aboard
Wakey wakey, the diving delights begin today. After breakfast in the gardens, you'll be collected from your hotel and driven to the dock to board your floating hotel which will be your home for the next seven nights. Get ready for up to five dives per day as you explore the sunken wrecks and marine marvels of Chuuk Lagoon. Put simply, this area has the best wreck diving in the world. With over 60 vessels lying on the sandy bottom, there's plenty to fill your logbook.
Settle into your cabin before popping up to the sundeck to mingle with your new diving buddies and join a briefing. You'll have time for a sunset test dive before settling in for your first night's sleep on the ocean.
Days 8-13 Eat, dive, sleep, repeat
Over the next five days you'll be living the manta of eat, dive, sleep, repeat. Although no two days are the same, we can give you an idea of the experiences that await you.
Most days begin early with a hot breakfast followed by the first dive briefing. Enjoy two morning dives before lunch, during which the liveaboard usually moves to a new site. After lunch, opt for another dive or relax on the sundecks or in your stateroom. A late afternoon dive is available, and dinner is served in the early evening. After this, you can choose to do a night dive or gather in the entertainment lounge to watch a movie or review the day's footage.
With over 50 sites to visit, there's plenty to keep you in the water and since many of the sites are close together, the boat will travel during your interval breaks, meaning you can dive a few sites in a day. Even better, the flexible schedule of liveaboard life means that multiple dives will be happening at a time so you and your buddy might have a 500ft wreck all to yourselves.
Sites that you can expect to visit include Rio de Janeiro Maru, Hanakawa Maru, Fumitzuki Destroyer, Betty Bomber, Momokawa Maru, Shinkoku Maru, Aikoku Maru and San Francisco Maru. While these wrecks draw divers with their sunken stories, the marine life that has claimed them as their home provide delights dive after dive.
For those who love some underwater photography, Rio de Janiero Maru is a fantastic wreck with the most photogenetic propellers now covered in colourful corals. Meanwhile for the shark lovers, enjoy multiple dives on Pizion Reef, a steep wall dive with resident reef sharks patrolling the blue.
Days 14-17 Time for some R&R
Sadly, it's time to bid farewell to the liveaboard life and return to land for the final days of your Chuuk Lagoon adventure. Enjoy a final breakfast on deck and double-check you have the contact details of your new diving buddies before being taken back to your hotel for four days of laid-back luxury.
Your hotel has an onsite dive shop, regarded as the best in Chuuk Lagoon, so fear not; you can be back in the water by lunchtime. Explore the waters from the shore to glide over corals of every hue, and spy resting turtles and darting tropical fish, or head out on a boat trip to play with the big boys in the blue, swimming with sharks and manta rays as the sun slowly sets.
Day 18: Land living
It's your final day on this tropical, remote paradise. As you'll be flying home tomorrow, you won't be able to dive, but you can still snorkel, kayak, paddleboard or explore the verdant landscape. Grab your boots for a hike to the Peniesene Waterfalls or lie back beneath the plan trees as you fill in your diving logbook (if there's any space left). And if it's some post-dive pampering you crave, head to the spa and book a massage for those tired limbs.
Day 19: Homebound
Sadly, it's time to wave goodbye to the laid-back, nature-engulfed lifestyle that you've been living. Take those final snaps along the sugar-soft sand beach and dip in the crystal-clear waters before your multi-flight trip back home. You'll be driven back to Chuuk Lagoon airport to begin the first part of your four-leg journey home.
Steal those final glances out the window and scroll through your underwater camera album, rehearsing the stories that you'll share with friends back home.
