When To Travel
All of the holidays we create are completely tailor-made to you
Day 1: Off to Africa
Today, you'll set off on your Mozambique diving adventure by boarding your international flight from London to Maputo, via Doha. The journey will take approximately 17 hours so try to get some rest on the flights.
Day 2: Onward to Tofo
Upon arrival in Maputo, you'll have a few hours to collect your bags and grab a bite to eat before taking your final flight to Inhambane. It is a quick one-hour hop to the coastal town and upon landing you will be greeted by a representative from Baia Sonambula who will assist with your luggage and drive you to your beachfront hideaway, where you will stay for the next four nights. Your sea-view bungalow looks out over the soft sands of Tofo Beach and is surrounded by lush vegetation. Settle in and then head out to your private deck where you can watch out for the dramatic acrobatics of humpback whales and the languid cruising of traditional dhows.
Days 3-5: Dive Dive Dive
Big marine life reigns supreme in the waters off Tofo, so it's no wonder this area is famous for its biodiversity and the opportunity to dive with a host of bucket list gems. Dives here can be challenging, with strong currents, surges and tidal changes that churn out world-famous waves (ideal for surfing enthusiasts), but there are few places in the world that can compete with the goliaths below the surface. Manta rays, whale sharks, turtles, stingrays and dolphins are just a few of the usual suspects you can expect on your dives. Humpback whales migrate through these waters along the coast of Mozambique between the months of May to October, offering the ideal chance to spot and swim with these magnificent creatures if you're travelling at this time of year.
During surface intervals, the excitement far from ebbs, so keep your eyes peeled for leatherback turtles, hammerheads, marlin and even orcas as you sip fresh coconut water and wait for your next descent, filled with ever more once-in-a-lifetime encounters.
Day 6: The Journey Continues to Vilanculos
Today you will be picked up from your villa in Tofo and transferred north to your next destination in Vilanculos. The drive will take approximately five hours, so once you arrive you can get settled in and start exploring your new surroundings.
Day 7: Day at Leisure
Your boutique hotel impresses with views across the Bazaruto Archipelago and boasts an atmosphere dedicated to relaxation and rejuvenation. Take advantage of the luxurious club spa for a treatment (or two) or embark on a tuk tuk cultural tour of Vilankulo, exploring the nearby market, church and orphanage, learning about the interesting history of this special place. If you're keen to jump right back in the water, there's paddle boarding, kite boarding instruction, traditional dhow trips, whale watching, snorkelling and, of course, scuba diving to keep you busy on your first full day in this new paradise.
Day 8: Seahorse Safari
With many species of underwater life under threat, it's no surprise that the seahorses around Vilankulo count themselves among those pressured by poaching. The Save the Seahorse Project has sought to offer an alternative income to ex-poachers, employing them instead as snorkel guides for guests eager to see these delicate creatures. Your safari will begin by sailing a traditional dhow to the low tide sandbanks where you'll be able to see these macro beauties while snorkelling.
Before heading home, you'll have the chance to enjoy a meal of local crab matapa cooked by a local family - the perfect way to round off your stay in paradise.
Day 9: Homeward Bound
After a leisurely morning, you'll be transferred to the Vilanculos Airport to catch a short flight back to Maputo. Your international flight is scheduled for the next day, so you'll be collected from the airport and transferred to your nearby hotel for one final night in magical Mozambique.
Days 10-11: International Flight Home
Today you will be transferred back to the Maputo Airport for your flight back to London, again via Doha. Settle in with a good movie and glass of wine to start plotting your next diving adventure, though we think this one will be difficult to beat.
