The south-eastern African nation of Mozambique is known for its impressive wildlife and beautiful Indian Ocean beaches. While its national parks, and those of its neighbours, are known for being home to the ‘Big Five’ of the safari world, Mozambique’s dive sites have their own megafauna. Giant manta rays and whale sharks love the plankton-rich waters of the Mozambique Channel, while humpback and southern right whales can be seen passing through the channel between June and December. Add in the second-most diverse coral reef in the world, and, whether you are an experienced diver or a beginner, diving in Mozambique will not disappoint.

Manta Coast

The area surrounding Tofo Bay and the Inhambane Peninsula is known as the Manta Coast, and with good reason. The Manta Coast offers a mix of dive sites; some of the offshore sites are more suitable for experienced divers, while the dive sites closer to shore are some of the best sites for beginner diving in Mozambique. As the name suggests, the area is a favourite hangout for manta rays. The Manta Reef dive site is the big draw here, and while the depth of the site requires an advanced certification, it's still accessible if you are a relative beginner. Diving in Mozambique is not just about the big stuff; there are plenty of macro critters and colourful marine life to enjoy away from the manta ray sites, and you may even be lucky enough to spot a dugong close to shore.

Bazaruto Archipelago

A short journey north from Tofo is the Bazaruto Archipelago, a collection of six picturesque and relatively untouched islands. The island group's coral reefs teem with tropical fish, while some of the world's largest populations of dolphins, whales, sharks, turtles and dugongs also call the archipelago home. The Bazaruto National Park was created to protect the local dugong and turtle populations, and its existence ensures the islands remain tranquil, secluded and a picture-perfect base from which to discover the beginner diving in Mozambique.

We love the combination of peaceful living and spectacular diving in Mozambique. Southern Africa is blessed with megafauna above and below the waves, and we can help you put together your dream itinerary to combine the game reserves of South Africa with the grandiose reefs of Mozambique. Tofo and Bazaruto offer the best beginner diving in Mozambique, and, together with their powder-soft beaches and tranquillity, they present the opportunity for an African odyssey that you will not forget.
